An important part of Norway’s foreign affairs concerns international economics and economic collaboration. The academic focus of the Department of International Economics is directed towards globalisation, international trade, international organisations (the WTO, IMF etc), international technology diffusion, economic growth, the activities of multinational firms, international corruption, as well as child labour and corruption.

Economic growth and technological innovation have become central research fields in the department. Important research topics have been international trade policy, income inequality and poverty together with fixed export costs.
The department collaborates with a range of other institutions, including the University of Oslo and the University in Tromsø, as well as institutions in the USA, China and in Europe.
