The project will include several different activities aimed at strengthening the competence of lecturers and students at the Chechen State University and familiarising them with western academic traditions, theory and scholarly literature. Competence-building efforts/courses will focus on topics such as democracy, peace and conflict theory and international relations, but will also include language and computer courses, skills that are neceassary in order to access and take part in international academic activities.

The Chechen State University in Grozny is facing great challenges. During the period of the two wars (1994–2004), university buildings, library, laboratories, computer lab, publishing house, botanic gardens etc were reduced to rubble and it was hardly possible to keep up any teaching at all. Today, staff and students are working hard to re-erect the university. The challenges are often practical (facilities, books, computers etc are lacking). After many years of isolation and war, it is also important, however, for staff and students to get a possibility for academic updating, contact and inspiration.
