Current research

Karsten Friis' main area of expertise is security and defense policies, international military operations and civilian-military relations.

He also follows political developments in the western Balkans and has worked as political adviser at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo. He has also worked as an adviser at the Norwegian Armed Forces in Oslo and in Kosovo. He has published on European security, Western Balkans, international operations and on peacekeeping and counter-insurgency.

Heads NUPI's MNE7 programme which concentrates on the development of civil-military relations in international operations.
