Norwegian Military in Afghanistan: knowledge management, doctrine development and strategic effect

The project will focus on central topics concerning Norway’s participation in Afghanistan with relevance to Norwegian policy makers and the Military.
The project will have two main focus areas:
- The Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) will do research on knowledge management in the Military and the coordination between various sectors in relation to the Norwegian commitment. There will be a comparative study of the Norwegian decision making systems and equivalent systems in Denmark and the Netherlands.
- The second focus area of the project, which is the responsibility of NUPI, concerns the development of an integral international strategy for the commitment and highlights the question: Is there a clear or integral strategy or professional plan concerning the involvement in Afghanistan? This includes further analysis of the character and meaning of the conflict, and also its influence on the alliances and value systems of which Norway is a part.
The project will also seek to highlight:
Norwegian foreign and security policies concerning Afghanistan.
Choices of different operational concepts and roles in Afghanistan.
Reformation of the security sector in the context of Afghanistan.
