– a study of women’s participation and leadership in politics worldwide

Torild Skard

Gender Perspectives on Political Participation and Leadership
Since the 1970s, governments around the world have supported the principle of gender equality in politics. The participation of women in formal political institutions at the national level has increased in recent decades, but slowly and unevenly. Since 1990 there has been a marked rise in the number of female heads of state and government – but why? Is this the result of economic, political, social or cultural factors? Has there been a democratization of governing bodies, or perhaps changes in the roles and situation of men and women, or other processes of change? Are developments parallel in different countries and regions, or do specific geographic conditions make a difference? These are among the questions explored in the project. The project will be published as a book on female heads of state and government in the world from 1945 to 2008.
