The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), in cooperation with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), holds its annual seminar on the security situation in Africa Tuesday 6 October at NUPI. This year the protection of civilians and responsibility to protect are on the agenda. Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre will give an introductory remark on the protection of civilians in conflicts. Researchers from NUPI and ISS will elaborate on this topic and on militias and rebel movements and present two case studies: FDLR – Democratic Republic of the Congo and Al-Shabaab – Somalia .

 

The seminar titled “Violence and Protection: Two Perspectives on Current Conflict Dynamics in Africa” takes place at NUPI from 12.30 to 15.30. NUPI Director Jan Egeland will chair the seminar.
