Leszek Balcerowicz is professor of economics, former chairman of the National Bank of Poland and Deputy Prime Minister in Tadeusz Mazowiecki's government. He is renowned for having implemented the Polish economic transformation programme, commonly known as “the shock therapy” in the 1990s.
