On 30 May 1992, the United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) as a response to the escalating war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite being among the most comprehensive ever used, these sanctions remain an under-focused field in the literature. This study is the most wide-ranging analysis of the comprehensive UN sanctions against the FRY undertaken to date, analysing the background to and aims for; political and socio-economic impact; long-term political and socio-cultural effects and overall degree of success of the sanctions against the FRY. It argues that the sanctions cannot be described as a success, but rather that they had questionable consequences both in the short and longer term.
