New book: Caspian Energy Politics
What role have the oil and gas resources played for the democratic development in the three largest oil-exporting countries on the Caspian Sea? And how have the enormous energy resources affected their relations with Russia and China?
These are among the questions explored in the book, Caspian Energy Politics: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan , edited by Indra Øverland, Heidi Kjærnet and Andrea Kendall-Taylor.
Due to volatile commodity prices and competition for the resources in and around the Caspian Sea, the governments of these petroleum exporters face a series of difficult decisions. They have tried to balance the short-term incentives to use oil revenues as a means to maintain power against the need for a long-term strategy to manage these valuable resources. Such options also have bearings on their international relations, not least those with Russia and China.
The book provides valuable insights for businesses and stakeholders seeking to understand developments in the region in general and in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in particular.
