The Department of International Politics was established in 2001 to unify NUPI’s long-standing research on international politics. Today, the department’s research is focused on international and global politics, and the implications of Norwegian foreign, security and defence policy. In addition, the department’s staff is engaged in more theoretical matters within the fields of security studies, IR theory, global governance and integration.

The thematic and geographical scope of the department is wide: the UN, NATO, the EU, the World Bank, international peace operations, security, globalisation, global governance, hegemony, transatlantic relations, peace building, diplomacy, Norwegian peace policy, radicalisation, international terrorism, piracy, disarmament/non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, military power, the Norwegian Armed Forces, the Middle East, Iran, Iraq, the USA, Great Britain, France, Turkey, the Nordic Countries and Norway.

The department aims at combining basic research and applied research through long-term programmes (e.g. Hegemony and World Order”, 2002–2008) and more policy-relevant research and investigation projects. International research dissemination and cooperation, i.a. through international research conferences, constitute central elements of the activities. Furthermore, the research seeks to provide practical relevance for the public debate on Norwegian foreign policy, for instance through seminars and participation in the media.

The department has developed a comprehensive network of international and national cooperation partners taking part in current projects, i.a. through AGORA, Consortium for Research on International Crime and Terror, as well as participation in the European research project EUPERFORM. The IP department’s projects involve researchers from several other departments and institutes, and vice versa; i.a. in order to promote cross-disciplinarity in the research.
