Current research

Melchior recently completed project Norway's imports from developing countries and the GSP, which investigated the Norwegian trade with low-income countries.

During 2008-2010, a main research focus has been the development of "geographical economics" in order to examine how domestic regional inequality is affected by globalisation. In various projects, large-scale numerical models have been used as a platform for empirical analysis of data at the subnational regional level. In the project ENEPO (EU Eastern Neighbourhood: Economic Potential and Future Development) such methods were used in the analysis of European integration and regional inequality.

In the project "Asia: Regionalisation and the seafood sector", a world trade model with 166 countries and regions is used to analyse regional disparities in China. In the project "GRANITE - Globalisation and the grassroots of India" a similar approach is used in the analysis of growth diffences and poverty in the states of India.

In addition, trade policy issues have been examined in various projects during 2008-2010; the latest example being the project "Trade preferences for the Least Developed Countries' exports of services".

[url]

Journal of Chinese Economics and Business Studies, vol. 8, no. 3

.Routledge.p. 227-252.Regional disparities are particularly high in some larger emerging economies, such as Russia and China, and inter-provincial inequality in China has increased rapidly after 1990. In the literature, a statistical link between globalisation and increased regional disparities in China has been established, but not the precise mechanisms and causal relationships. In this paper, we therefore simulate a world trade model with 166 countries and regions in order to shed light on these mechanisms and the future development of regional disparities in China. [url]
